Frequently asked questions

Below is a list of questions that we anticipate you might ask. We understand that every question might not be answered, so we’ve included a submission box at the bottom of the page.

General

  • We have no expectations for how Artists use their time at Stove Works. Do whatever is best for you. We ask only that you come with an open and kind mind.

We believe the relationships you build onsite are as valuable as the work you create while you are here. The Artists establish the tone of each month; some months are more social than others, and some are quieter. If you are seeking a retreat-type residency experience, this may not be the right Residency for you.

Stove Works Staff is fairly removed from your daily activities except for the Residency Fellow. Of course, we want to be invited to hang out with you, but we don’t operate under the assumption that we are perpetually invited. Your time at the Residency is your time. The space is your space.

  • 1 - 3 months. New Residents arrive on the 2nd of each month and leave on the last day.

  • Yes. However, we do have one studio available for a Resident who lives off-site.

  • Yes, we accept international Artists.

Will you help in the sponsorship process for international artists?

A B1/B2 visa for business and pleasure should suffice for your stay. It allows for up to 6 months of travel within the United States. We would happily send you a .pdf version of your Letter of Acceptance to supplement your B1/B2 application. **Depending on your country of origin, applications for the B1/B2 visas can take up to a full year to be processed/approved.

  • Yes, MFA candidates and current students are welcome to apply.

  • Yes. 18.

  • You bet! On all fronts. We’d love for you to participate in any programmatic offerings we have, but nothing is required of you. Programs associated with the Residency are Artist Presentations, Open Studios, and Visiting Critics. We definitely encourage you all to come up with your own events as well, Karaoke for example.

Stove Works Gallery hours are from Noon to 6:30 PM, Wednesday through Saturday. We host over 100 public programs a year. Most of these events occur within gallery hours. Some of these events are courtyard markets, public screenings, music performances, panels, presentations, fundraisers, exhibition openings, and the list goes on! There is only one monthly public program that we host (Chattanooga Noise Night), which takes place later in the evening from 8 to 10 PM on the third Friday of every month. It is also the only regularly scheduled event that takes place in the shared workshop space.

  • The short answer is no. However, we will consider deferrals for medical reasons.

What should/can I bring?

  • Spouses and partners can visit but they need to be pre-approved. If your spouse or partner is an active collaborator in your practice and will want to stay an extended period of time during your residency, you should include them in your application as a collaborator.

  • No. As much as we’d like to accommodate ALL of the pets, we are currently not accepting them. It’s a bummer. We know and we get it. We have had volunteers (in-town) offer to host dogs for Artists during their residency, so if you would like us to reach out to them on your behalf, we would be happy to do so.

  • Visitors are allowed during your residency, but Stove Works and your cohort will need to be informed prior to their arrival. If you will have a visitor staying in the residency quarters, we ask that you get the approval of the current residents. All visitors are required to sign a Guest Waiver.

  • Yes, it is encouraged! We do have some bedding left over from previous Residents. If you are traveling by air, contact us before your Residency to see if there are some available.

  • Anything you might need for your practice that can’t be ordered online or found in a run-of-the-mill art supply store. We have a list, “Ray’s List”, of suppliers linked in your orientation packet that will help you source steel, lumber, glass, and an assortment of other things.

  • If you’re coming during a warmer month, we highly recommend you bring your swimmies. There are some really exceptional swimming holes in the area. ;)

Facilities

  • Yes. You will need to provide your own pillows, bedding, and towels. Every bedroom has its own bathroom.

  • It’s communal! None of the bedroom/studios have kitchens. This is our way of saying, “Hey! Get to know each other.” The kitchen is fully stocked with all sorts of pots, pans, crockpots, woks, etc. However, fridge space is a little sparse. Luckily, each Residency is equipped with a mini-fridge.

  • Yes. The “object-based” residency comes with a separate but attached, studio in addition to the bedroom. You should choose the residency that allows you the space you will need for the work you will be doing during your residency. Writing-based or “non-object-based” studios are a single bedroom/studio space. Apply for which best suits your needs.

  • Yes, Stove Works is ADA compliant and there is an ADA accessible Standard Studio. There is also an exterior lift to the second floor where the Residency quarters are located. But, we’ll be honest, we don’t love our lift. Please reach out to us about it, so we can have a candid conversation about access. If you have specific accommodation needs, please include them in your application and feel free to reach out to us with any questions at residency@stoveworks.org.

  • We sure do!

Monies

  • No Residency Fee! Once accepted, Stove Works’ Residency is free to attend, with the exception of a few fees listed below. That said, Residents are responsible for their travel, materials, and food/beverages during their stay.

    Those little costs:

    $10—20—30 Staggered Application Fee
    $100 Security deposit upon acceptance
    $20 Studio cleaning fee
$ Cost per foot to use the Epson Sure Color
Book donation to the library (Inscribed) - A book of your choosing that has influenced your practice that will live on-site as a relic of your time with us.

  • Yes, residents are responsible for their own food and meals. General cooking basics such as olive oil, salt, and pepper are provided.

  • No. Not at this time. However, after acceptance, we would happily provide you with a letter of acceptance that might aid you in your quest to secure funding.

We do have a couple Fellowship opportunities. Check out the main Residency page for more information.

  • Yes

  • You don’t need a car, but it is recommended. Most stores are not within walking distance. You can use a rideshare service (which is pretty cheap here) or carpool with your fellow Residents.
