Shredded, spun, woven New York Times Magazine from October 29, 2023: Slipping Away: The scientists who are watching their lifes work disappear, embroidery thread, fragments of text saved from the cover article
The “Alternate Readings” series is woven from discarded New York Times Magazines. I shred, spin, and weave the Magazines to metabolize the climate, health, and social crises featured in their pages. Paired with fragments of text saved from the issue's cover article, the resulting tactile color fields offer space to reflect on the world while also attending to the limitations of language and the fragmented ways we often consume news.
I began this project during my Stove Works residency, weaving the first 15 pieces on a small hand-held loom. Since then, what started as an experiment has grown into a series of more than 60 works featured in two solo exhibitions.
