Harrison Wayne - "Wedge set (3)," 2024
Cedar, pine, latex paint, graphite, blue velvet.
11 1/4 inch by 7 inch by 2 1/2 inch (in box)
During my residency, I became obsessed with the wooden wedge as a tool for keeping doors open. Through the meditative repetition of this form, I use the wedge as a poetic device to explore the human desire for connection. The inscribed motifs reference a broader personal narrative and reconceptualize the humble forms as portals or structures that can incite memories and other sentiments. Beyond their functionality and metaphoric role, the wedges exist as building blocks for playful and ritualistic assembly. The box containing the wedge set is constructed in exact dimensional ratio to my mother's grave marker, and is lined with a crushed blue velvet which she purchased before her passing but never got to use.
