Kaleena Stasiak - "Bellwether," 2024
plasma cut steel, steel rod, copper chain
48 x 48 x 72 inches
Bellwether is a sculpture reminiscent of a wind chime or mobile, hanging from the ceiling and measuring 48 in diameter and 72 in height. This sensitive object consists of a series of patinated plasma-cut steel shapes suspended from copper chains that are familiar, referencing labor, domesticity, and the cycle of life. It is tempting to try and interpret a narrative from their seemingly hierarchical ordering. As the air in the room shifts, the symbols switch positions, the wind using it like a medium to communicate future events.
This sculpture was made while in residence at Stoveworks in May 2024. The gantry came in handy when hanging it and trying to figure out how to make it balance!
