Makenzie Goodman - "Owen's River (Owen's Valley)," 2024
Silver Gelatin Prints
14in. x 22in (framed)
The works in this exhibition were both made at Stove Works during the month of July. They represent an initial inquiry into place through one of the most formless states of matter: dust. Dust travels across continents and mountain ranges, it feeds phytoplankton in oceans, and extends into and beyond Earth’s atmosphere, yet dust can be traced to specific locations and human action. As our climate disaster unfolds, dust reveals connections and inequities over geographic space and time.
What was remarkable about my time at Stove Works was the complete freedom to experiment. I was connected with a local darkroom, Safelight, to make contact prints using collected dust as a medium (sacrilege to traditional photo processes) and made screen prints with dust, something I didn't have the first clue how to pull off prior to the residency. The support of the Stove Works community and the my fellow residents was integral to developing this work and I am so grateful.
