Ivy Gild - "Docile Bodies," 2018

This set of work softens the male form as it is interspersed with abstracted environments. On my 21st birthday, I was finally allowed to open a time capsule that loved ones constructed during the first year of my life. Upon opening it, I found PlayGirl magazine from February 1994, the month I was born. I was horrified and assumed that my grandpa had thrown it in there as a weird joke. My mom assured me that it had been my grandma and suddenly, I thought she was absolutely the coolest. I scanned figures from the magazines and printed them on Jacquard cotton. The other squares in the checkerboard pattern come from 120mm double-exposed images taken on a Mamiya C220 in the wilderness. I used a classic quilting pattern to weave the male landscape with the natural one.
