statement -
This exhibition explores themes of ancestral storytelling, generational dreams, migration, and growing roots in a new home. The term “celestial” was a derogatory phrase used for Chinese laborers who came to the American South beginning in the 1860s. China was referred to as the “Celestial Empire” because they worshiped the sky and heavens. Celestial Bodies will explore the stories of Chinese and Asian immigrants in the South, their future generations, and the subsequent birth of a new and unique visual landscape and imagination.
