Join us for a gathering of conversation and inspiration with one of the works featured in our current exhibition, Hand to Mouth. While sitting with Cherrie Yu’s work Lydia and Matthew, we'll use dialogue and activities to learn about the artist's specific experiences and search for a deeper understanding of our shared ones. Read the artist's statements of the work below.
“Lydia and Matthew is a screen dance featuring a duet between the two performers Lydia Feuerhelm and Matthew Lemus. Lydia is a partner dancing teacher, and Matthew is a janitor at a high-rise residential building in downtown Chicago. I spent a month and a half working with Lydia and Matthew separately, collecting their biographical information, performance histories, movement habits and life routines. In the end I put together a solo for each of them that corresponded with each other.”
Inside the Art, Outside Ourselves is a Stove Works series that invites you to spend time reflecting on a work from our current exhibition. Through guiding prompts, we encourage you to dig deeper into the work, into yourself, and to build a connection.
Each worksheet will be launched at a public workshop. After the fact, this worksheet can be used by you or with a group at your own pace. You are welcome to respond in whichever working practice makes the most sense to you, be it through drawing, writing, etc.
