Repatterning: making prints using camera-less photography processes

Using cameraless photography (cyanotyping), Resident Kim Coleman will how us how to create patterns on second-hand textiles. Our new designs will be in dialogue with the existing prints. Through the process we will consider the politics of the clothing and textile industry, and the thinking behind the patterns and imagery we find on the materials around us.

About images:

Seeds (2023) This print is on pink shirt fabric with a black polka dot design. I used papaya seeds to mimic the polka dots. It was hard to get a neat pattern so mine is more organic, reflecting the hand-made nature of the cyanotype.

Limes and Papayas (2023) fabric from a top covered with a print of lemons. In Mexico lemons aren’t eaten much but limes and papaya are. I reprinted the fabric with my own papaya and lime design.

Grid (2023) pillow case covered in a delicate grid design. the cyanotype ink sunk into the exposed fabric and looks as though the ink is finding a path through the gridded design.

Doormat (2023) pillowcase with a green and white stripe design printed with a cyanotype of a doormat.
