Curatorial Statement:
I am fascinated by the intersection of art and artists when they come together around a topic. Women’s health issues have been on my mind as we grapple with complex topics from access to affordable healthcare, lack of research on important women’s health topics, and the debate over women’s agency. I looked for artists with ideas touching on these topics to help us all explore our own positions on women’s health and connect us to the experiences of others. The variety of mediums was especially important to give a broad view of the topic and engage a wider audience.

Julia Steffner, a student at Girls Preparatory School, is the recipient of the Fletcher Bright Fellowship. The Fletcher Bright Fellowship is a grant awarded to a GPS junior to complete her project related to the arts that will strengthen and benefit the greater Chattanooga Community. Applicants must go through a rigorous application process and speak before a panel of judges about their proposed project before receiving the grant. As the recipient, I am using the Fletcher Bright Fellowship grant to curate an exhibit pertaining to women’s health rights by commissioning artists across Chattanooga and holding monthly peer-mentoring meetings with the commission and student artists.
