Chandra Ward engages the current Stove Works exhibition, A Plague of Starlings, with a discussion on mobility and citizenship. Juxtaposing art with academia, citizenship and mobility, this talk will have us grapple with what it means to embody citizenship in the context of access to public spaces, in the context that public spaces are not neutral sites, but rather contested sites of belonging and citizenship that reflect the social structure of any given society.
Chandra Ward is a native of Metro Atlanta and is currently a sociology professor at UTC. She is considered an urbanist, currently interested in issues of transit equity and mobility justice. She has worked with CARTA and the Enterprise Center on local research projects. While in Chattanooga, Chandra hopes her work can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive Chattanooga where queer communities and communities of color can take up space unapologetically.
