addenda: an exercise course from the Dictionary of Negative Space explores unnamed ideas while building tolerance for the unspoken and empathy for people who feel broken. karen Krolak’s ongoing project Dictionary of Negative Space (DoNS) holds space for the words that the English language lacks for grief, trauma, and repair. DoNS was inspired by Krolak’s experiences after she became a [74] and a [41] all at once when a car crash killed her mother, father & brother in 2012.

BIO

karen Krolak - (she/her - pronounced Care - wren Crow- lock)

n.- a free range collaborator who lives with a rare chronic health condition on the unceded lands of the Massachusett and Pawtucket near what is now called Boston, MA.

n. - co-founder/Artistic Director of Monkeyhouse (/www.monkeyhouselovesme.com), an award-winning nonprofit that connects communities to choreography, since 2000.

n. - creator of the Dictionary of Negative Space (DoNS) (https://dictionaryofnegativespace.com) which holds space for unnamed ideas related to grief, trauma, and repair.

Krolak’s Dictionary of Negative Space has been featured in an I-ARE residency at the Dance Complex in Cambridge, MA; in exhibitions in New York, Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, Louisiana, Massachusetts and S.Korea; conferences in India, S.Korea, England and the US; as well as in collaborations with Monkeyhouse, Nicole Harris, and Scott McPheeters. Her DoNS residency at the Newton Cemetery in 2019 was supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council. DoNS will be featured in her first solo exhibit at Stove Works in Chattanooga, TN, addenda: an exercise course from the Dictionary of Negative Space.
